I attended the CAI conference in Las Vegas from 3 May to 6 May 2017.

On the Wednesday, we were taken to the Panorama Body Corporate. Two high rise towers in the main city of Las Vegas. We met in the conference room where the committee generously answered questions. We then toured the games room, pool area, gym and doggy area which had synthetic grass. I found it very interesting at this conference that there were dogs on leads walking around in Caesar’s Palace Hotel, in shops and basically anywhere humans were allowed.
This was the same in the UK when I visited last year. A dog was in the restaurant of a pub. Animals are part of the family and go everywhere. I believe the number of units in the two buildings was around 550. It is run as a single body corporate. From Panorama, we visited Taylor’s Body corporate offices. The owner talked about the family business and how as the 3rd generation he now runs the company. Each group of bodies corporate is run by a team. 1 BCM, 1 assistant and one maintenance person.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday were the actual conference sessions. The education tracks were Professional Development, Legal/Legislative, New Trends and Business Practices. The Legal/Legislative tracks, however were not for international visitors. This was the largest conference to date with just over 1200 participants. Approximately 100 were international from Canada, South Africa, Dubai, Spain, Columbia, UAE and of course Australia with the largest contingent of 65. There were two General Sessions; the first was Laura Stack talking about “What to Do When There’s Too Much To Do”, Steve Gilliland whose topic was “Enjoy the Ride”. Both of these speakers were very entertaining. On Saturday, we had Alan Fine who discussed “Free Yourself Up to Do Your Best Stuff”. All of the speakers have books on the topics plus lots more.
It is looking like the future trends will be extremely important and we will need to keep up the pace for the changes to come. Make sure you are up to date on drones, computer hackers, Airbnb, staffing is up to par, Apathy, Anger and Arrogance within strata, Social Media options, and change in general. Don’t wait for it to happen around you.
